What to wear on Safari.

It is summertime here in South Africa and as a lot of people are heading to our beautiful beaches, a lot of people are also heading for a nice bush breakaway.

Imagine you are standing with a refreshing G&T in your hand. The radiant red and orange African sunset is behind you and the Elephants bathing in the water hole in front of you. Picturesque scenery enough to make all your Instagram followers green with envy. But the big question is, what are you wearing?

As we have a bit of both worlds in our lives, the bush and the city, we thought we would combine it and give you some inspiration from both our worlds. Nicola is used to seeing guests from all over the world on game drive every day, so she has some insight into what really works realistically and fashionably on Safari.

Just remember that you won’t be on a game viewer the whole time and there are some other important outfits to be sure to include in your suitcase.

Here are some key pieces we thought to include:

  1. Reliable pair of jeans

Perhaps a coloured and a midwash pair of jeans will be ideal to take along, so you know that you are covered. I found these stunning pair of beige jeans from Mango that are available on Superbalist. Just take note, that it is frowned upon at most lodges to wear white during out on safari, so i would keep these lighter pairs for dinner or just relaxing at the lodge. I would also recommend taking a pair of midwash jeans like these ones available from Country Road as they would be great for early morning game drives.

2. I am a firm believer that a Linen Shirt can go a long way. This Zara Linen Shirt with Pocket in a wide range of colours is ideal for relaxing days in the bush. It can be paired with shorts or with a pair of jeans for the cooler days.

3. Pair of comfortable sneakers – The Freedom of Movement ladies tekkie is a must-have this season as it is both stylish and comfortable. I am in love with the new blossom colourway. Also see our post on “Cool Kicks on the block” for all our favourites.

4. Warm Jacket

Depending on the season that you will be going on your trip, it can get quite chilly early mornings as well as late afternoons. It is always a great idea to pack in a neutral colour staple jacket that can go with any outfit. I found this amazing Parka Jacket on Superbalist, that can be dressed up or down for game drives or late nights.

5. An essential item to pack is definitely a wide brim hat. The african sun is tough and can put some strain on your skin if you don’t protect it. I found these comfortable hats to tag along on the Sunhats website.

6. Shirt dress – This can be worn up or down, during the day or night, or even over your swimwear at the pool. It is a classic for a reason and comfortable as well. I really like this dress from Something Pretty. It is available in an array of colours.

7. Swimwear as it can get quite hot during the day and most safari lodges have access to pools, it is the ideal time to put on your best bathing suit and get into the water to cool off after a nice game drive.

These are just a few of our must-haves for going on safari. There are obviously some other important things to remember to pack in your suitcase like your SPF-50 sunscreen, sunglasses and your camera.
